Toy libraries across Australia will be busy in the coming months delivering projects to improve their accessibility for children with additional support needs including Autism, ADHD and Developmental Delay.
In February Minister Rishworth announced DSS funding to enable TLA to run a very special and targeted grant program to toy libraries. Minister Rishworth said “At the heart of this is Australia’s children. We want them to thrive, to love to learn, and to help parents and carers have time to connect with community.”
TLA is proud to represent the toy libraries of Australia who are passionately helping children access quality toys and resources to enable fun and learning at home every day. Toy libraries give local families a place to connect and support their children in fun and welcoming community environment.
We know our toy libraries have a commitment to continually improving their toy libraries including a desire to improve accessibility for children with disabilities and developmental delay. It was no surprise to us, given the passion within our toy library community, that the grant round enabling targeted support to children with additional support needs received 67 worthy grant applications from member toy libraries.
Through the funding made available by DSS the toy libraries listed below will receive $1,000 to deliver their projects. All of the projects have identified local people or groups with either lived experience of disabilities, or professionals who support children with disabilities to connect with to deliver and promote their project. Toy libraries will build on existing connections and make new connections to ensure the resources and services meets the current needs of local children who have additional support needs.
A large number of toy libraries will spend funding directly on toys and the storage such as Goldfields Regional Toy Library (Kalgoorlie, WA) who plan to use the grant funding to purchase various items and compile kits to help families and carers to achieve their goals of helping their children to regulate sensory needs and engage meaningfully with their world. Each kit will include products that; stimulate tactile, visual, and auditory senses; promote skills like regulated breathing, self-affirmation and mindfulness; visual timers assisting with transitions, time blindness, and building achievable routines. The Goldfields toy library state “Given the current economic conditions it is understandable that families feel overwhelmed by the oversaturation of items out there claiming to support children with additional needs. These kits allow families to ‘try before they buy’.”
A number of toy libraries identified accessibility to the toy library as an area of improvement and funding will be spent on improving targeted areas of accessibility. For example Rosebud Toy Library (Victoria) who will support families and children with additional support needs by securing the services of a professional to develop a social story about visiting the Toy Library. Through the project the Rosebud Toy Library committee plans to liaise with both toy library members and community partners to develop a list of toys suitable to support this group of members and purchase them for loan to better understand an already identified gap in the collection in the area of sensory toys and resources.
